The Effect of Auditory Cues on the Audiotactile Roughness Perception: Modulation Frequency and Sound Pressure Level
نویسنده
چکیده
Scraping a surface with the finger tip is a multimodal event. We obtain information about the texture, i.e. roughness of the surface, at least through three different sensory channels, i.e. auditory, tactile and visual. People are highly skilled in using touch-produced sounds to identify texture properties. Sound pressure level, modulation frequency and pitch of the touch-induced scraping sounds are the important psychoacoustical determinants of the texture roughness perception. In this study, psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate what are the relative contributions of the auditory and tactile sensory modalities to the multimodal (audiotactile) roughness percept?, what are the effects of the perceptual discrepancy between the modalities on the multimodal roughness judgment and how different modulation frequency and loudness conditions affect the subjects’ roughness perception.

Background: The main result of hearing impairment is reduction of speech perception. Patient with auditory neuropathy can hear but they can not understand. Their difficulties have been traced to timing related deficits, revealing the importance of the neural encoding of timing cues for understanding speech. Objective: In the present study psychoacoustic perception (minimal noticeable differen...
متن کاملAn Effect of the Coherence between Envelopes across Frequency Regions on the Perception of Roughness
Auditory roughness arises when rapid beats can be perceived. It is considered to be linked to the amount of amplitude fluctuation within a given auditory filter, around a “roughest” modulation frequency of 70 Hz. The way roughness builds up if sounds have energy spread over a large frequency region is unclear. When two sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) tones with different carrier frequenc...

It has been shown that congenital blindness can lead to anomalies in the integration of auditory and tactile information, at least under certain conditions. In the present study, we used the parchment-skin illusion, a robust illustration of sound-biased perception of touch based on changes in frequency, to investigate the specificities of audiotactile interactions in early- and late-onset blind...

Introduction: Low frequency sound is one of the most important sources of sound in the environment. Some individual differences such as extraversion, neuroticism, and sound sensitivity are factors that influence the effect of sound on cognitive functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of personality type (introversion/extraversion) on cognitive Performances in the pres...

Our brains continuously bind information obtained through many sensory channels to form solid percepts of objects and events. Usually these pieces of information complement and confirm each other, thereby improving the reliability of our perception [1]. But incongruities between the sensory inputs may result in unexpected percepts due to intersensory interactions, as in the well-known audiovisu...
